Step One: Send out a 3 day letter.
Step Two: After the 3 day letter has been sent and there is an additional unexcused day of absence, notify the county attorney's office in writing via fax or mail. Include a copy of letters sent, attendance records, and any relevant information to give a full understanding of the situation. The county attorney's office will refer the family to the Truancy Intervention Program Director who will hold an Attendance Intervention Meeting (AIM).
Step Three: At 7 unexcused days of absence, submit the Truancy Reporting Form (see below) to the County Attorney's office via mail or fax. The family will be referred to the Truancy Diversion Program (TDP).
Note: The county attorney's office has the discretion to forgo the truancy diversion program and go straight to a truancy petition. This typically occurs if a student has a prior truancy or a prior delinquency record that is lengthy and/or demonstrates that the student/family has a history of failing to cooperate.
Step Four: If the family does not participate in or fails to complete the TDP, the case will be referred back to the County Attorney's Office and a petition will be filed by the Assistant County Attorney.
