Step One: School sends letter to parents at three days of unexcused absences.
Step Two: At five unexcused or a combination of ten total unexcused/excused absences, school refers student to the truancy officer who may take the following actions (in cooperation with school administration):
Step Three: At seven unexcused absences or more, school refers student to the Carlton County District Attorney who will determine the next steps based on law, age of student, and situation.

Step Two: At five unexcused or a combination of ten total unexcused/excused absences, school refers student to the truancy officer who may take the following actions (in cooperation with school administration):
- Meet with the student and/or parent/guardian to explain Minnesota State attendance laws and consequences.
- Sign an individual attendance contract with student and/or parents.
- Contact and arrange assistance for family with any needed support services (ie: family school support worker, social worker, school nurse, school counselor).
Step Three: At seven unexcused absences or more, school refers student to the Carlton County District Attorney who will determine the next steps based on law, age of student, and situation.
